  17.      With the astonishing events during the 1988 Olympic Games, and the
  18. disqualification of an athlete on anabolic steroids, that lost him and his
  19. country a gold medal, the topic of steroid use has become one of interest to
  20. many.  Though there are many aspects that concern the public, the one that
  21. interests me the most are the basic medical facts that surround the use of
  22. these agents, and the risks that athletes, both amateur and professional, take
  23. when they use these chemicals to enhance their performance.  There are
  24. probably more myths about the "good" effects than knowledge about the adverse
  25. effects used as reasons for taking steroids, and so I was pleased to find an
  26. excellent brochure that strikes right to the heart of the problem and
  27. discusses the matter realistically.  It is entitled, "Anabolic Steroids;
  28. Losing at Winning" and is free for the asking from the Food and Drug
  29. Administration (FDA), HFE--80, 5600 Fishers Lane, Rockville, MD 20857.  A
  30. stamped, self addressed envelope would be appreciated and will help speed this
  31. important information to you.  And its not only the athletes that should be
  32. interested in this material, which clearly lists the side effects and adverse
  33. reactions of these drugs, but also every parent with a youngster interested in
  34. participating in sports.  Learning the true about the use of steroids now may
  35. prevent the tragedy of impaired health later on.  Be sure to write to the FDA
  36. for your copy.
